Dabhol Beach & Velneshwar Temple: Dapoli's Hidden Coast

Dabhol and Velneshwar are two of Konkan's most underrated destinations — a historic port town, a serene beach, and one of Maharashtra's most sacred Shiva temples. Here's your guide.

Dabhol Beach & Velneshwar Temple: Dapoli's Hidden Coast

South of Dapoli, where the Vashishti River meets the sea, lies Dabhol — one of the most historically significant ports on the Konkan coast. Nearby Velneshwar, perched on a headland between two beaches, holds one of the twelve sacred Shiva temples of the Konkan. Together, these two destinations make for a rich half-day or full-day excursion from a base in Dapoli.

Dabhol: A Port with Deep History

Dabhol (also spelled Dabhol or Dabhul) was a thriving medieval port — at its height in the 14th and 15th centuries, it rivalled Calicut and Hormuz as a hub for spice trade. Arab, Persian, and Portuguese traders all passed through here. The Portuguese later fortified it, and traces of that era survive in the name "Dabhol" (derived from the Persian Dabol).

Today, Dabhol is a quiet town on the south bank of the Vashishti estuary. The estuary itself is wide and navigable — fishermen cross it in wooden boats, and the mangrove-lined banks are excellent for birdwatching (see our Konkan birdwatching guide).

How to reach Dabhol from Dapoli: ~38 km south via the inland route through Guhagar. Alternatively, a boat ferry crosses the Vashishti estuary from Bhopan (north bank) to Dabhol — a scenic 15-minute crossing.

Dabhol Beach

Dabhol's beach is a long, crescent arc of dark sand, almost entirely deserted. Facing the open Arabian Sea, it has strong wave action and is not suited for swimming, but the scenery — fishing boats, coconut palms, the sound of the sea — is peaceful. Sunrise here is spectacular.

The beach is about 2 km from Dabhol town centre. There are no facilities; carry water and snacks.

Velneshwar Beach & Temple

Velneshwar is 12 km north of Dabhol. The village sits on a narrow headland between two beaches — the north beach (calmer, better for swimming in the October–May season) and the south beach (wilder, better for watching waves).

Velneshwar Mahadev Temple is the centrepiece — one of the twelve Jyotirlinga-like "Dwadasha" Shiva temples of the Konkan, it draws pilgrims throughout the year. The temple sits in a courtyard of ancient trees, with the sound of the sea audible from within. The architecture is traditional Konkan Hemadpanthi style — low, horizontal, with carved stone pillars and a tiled roof. Open: 6 AM–12 PM and 4 PM–8 PM daily. Entry free; photography restricted near the sanctum.

Coconut groves and a freshwater stream run alongside the south beach — an unusual combination that creates a lush, tropical atmosphere.

Getting There from Dapoli

  • Dabhol: ~38 km south, about 55 minutes by road
  • Velneshwar: ~30 km south, about 45 minutes via Guhagar road
  • From Aurai Villa near Kolthare Beach: ~35 km to Velneshwar (40 minutes)

The drive itself is scenic — narrow roads through cashew orchards, coconut groves, and occasional sea views.

What to Combine This With

  • Morning at Velneshwar temple + beach (9–11 AM)
  • Lunch at Guhagar town (midway) — try the fish thali at Kamat's
  • Afternoon at Dabhol estuary for birdwatching and the boat ferry experience
  • Evening back at Kolthare for sunset — the Kolthare Beach sunset is spectacular

Q: What is the best time to visit Velneshwar Temple?
A: Early morning (6–8 AM) is quietest. Avoid Mondays and Shivaratri unless you enjoy large pilgrimage crowds.
