Kolhapur to Dapoli: Scenic Coastal Drive Guide
The Kolhapur to Dapoli drive cuts through the Western Ghats via some of Maharashtra's most scenic passes. Here's the route, key stops, and what to expect.

Kolhapur and Dapoli sit on opposite sides of the Western Ghats — Kolhapur on the Deccan plateau side, Dapoli on the Konkan coast. The road between them crosses the Sahyadri range via a dramatic ghat section, providing a journey that compresses enormous geographical variety into 200 km.
The Route
Kolhapur → Radhanagari → Amba Ghat → Ratnagiri → Dapoli
Distance: 190–200 km | Time: 4–5 hours
Breaking Down the Drive
Kolhapur to Radhanagari (30 km): The route passes through the outskirts of Kolhapur and south through agricultural land toward the Sahyadri foothills. Radhanagari is known for the Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary (Indian Bison and leopard habitat) — a brief stop if wildlife interests you.
Amba Ghat Section (30 km): The most dramatic part of the drive. The road climbs sharply into the Sahyadri range, then descends the western face toward the Konkan. During monsoon, this section has dozens of waterfalls and a vivid green forest canopy. Outside monsoon, the views from the high point of the ghat encompass both the plateau and the coastal plain.
Amba to Ratnagiri (80 km): The Konkan descent leads onto the coastal plain. The road passes through fishing villages and coconut groves. At Ratnagiri, you're on the same NH66 coastal highway that leads north to Dapoli.
Ratnagiri to Dapoli (70 km): The final leg north up the coast. Flat, palm-lined, passing through small coastal towns.
Alternative Route: Via Panhala and Kagal Ghat
A slightly longer (230 km) but less trafficked alternative routing through the historic Panhala Fort area and Kagal Ghat. Recommended for those who want to incorporate Panhala Fort (a significant Maratha-era fortification where Shivaji Maharaj spent considerable time) into the journey.
Key Stops
Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary: Worth 1–2 hours if you depart early. The sanctuary is primarily forest and grassland; the Indian Gaur (Bison) is frequently seen near the forest edges at dawn.
Amba Ghat Viewpoint: At the top of the pass, a pullover with views over the Konkan plain toward the sea. The air is noticeably cooler than the valley below.
Ratnagiri Town: Stop for a fish thali lunch — Ratnagiri has excellent Malvani restaurants. The town is also worth a 1-hour walk: Thibaw Palace and Ratnadurg Fort are both accessible.
