Nashik to Dapoli: Road Trip Guide Through Maharashtra's Contrasting Landscapes

Nashik and Dapoli represent two of Maharashtra's most distinctive landscapes: the high plateau of the Deccan with its vineyards and ancient temples, and the humid, lush Konkan coast with its beaches and fishing harbours. The road between them crosses the Western Ghats — one of India's great natural barriers — and the transition from one to the other is as dramatic as any in the country.

The Route

Nashik → Igatpuri → Kasara → Ghoti → Pune-Mumbai Expressway → NH66 → Mahad → Poladpur → Dapoli

Distance: Approximately 220–250 km depending on the exact route
Time: 5–6 hours

Breaking Down the Drive

Nashik to Igatpuri (50 km, 1 hour)

This section descends from the Nashik plateau toward the Sahyadri range. The road from Nashik toward Igatpuri crosses the Trimbakeshwar hills — stop at Trimbakeshwar if you're interested in one of Maharashtra's 12 Jyotirlinga temples before beginning the coastal leg.

Igatpuri to Kasara / Shahapur (50 km, 1 hour)

The descent from Igatpuri brings you into the rain shadow zone — this stretch receives 2,000–3,000mm of monsoon rainfall. In monsoon (July–August), the highway here becomes extraordinarily green with waterfalls visible from the road.

Kasara to NH66 Junction near Pen (70 km, 1.5 hours)

The Mumbai-Nashik highway is a well-maintained 4-lane expressway through this section. Traffic can be heavy toward the Mumbai-Pune Expressway junction. Join NH66 heading south toward Goa.

NH66 South: Pen to Mahad to Dapoli (90 km, 2 hours)

This is the coastal approach — the road runs through the Konkan plain, increasingly lush and palm-lined as you head south. Mahad is the junction town where you turn off toward Poladpur and Dapoli. The final 60 km from Poladpur has a mix of flat coastal road and winding rural stretches.

Recommended Stops

Trimbakeshwar Temple (Nashik area): One of 12 Jyotirlingas — significant for Hindu pilgrims and architecturally interesting for all visitors.

Bhandardara Lake (slight detour, 60 km from Nashik): A large reservoir in the Sahyadri foothills with camping options. Worth a stopover for overnight stays on the way.

Mahad: A significant market town on the Konkan approach. Good for fuel and a lunch stop.

Alternative Route: Via Pune

Some travellers from Nashik prefer routing through Pune (Nashik → Pune, 210 km; then Pune → Dapoli via Tamhini Ghat, 185 km). This is longer in distance (395 km) but the Pune–Dapoli section via Tamhini Ghat is spectacularly scenic. Recommended for those who want the most scenic total journey rather than the most direct.

Departure Timing

From Nashik: Depart 5–6 AM to reach Dapoli by 11 AM–noon. This avoids traffic through the Nashik and Kalyan/Bhivandi corridors.

Friday departures: Mumbai-bound traffic on the highway increases significantly on Fridays. Leave Nashik before 7 AM or plan to wait out the peak.
