Anjarle Beach Guide: Turtle Nesting, Pristine Sands & How to Get There

Anjarle is a name few people outside Konkan know — and that is precisely what makes it so special. Situated about 18 km from Dapoli town, Anjarle Beach is a crescent of pale golden sand flanked by casuarina trees, a small river estuary on one end, and the ancient Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple perched dramatically on a rock formation at the other.

Why Anjarle Is Different

Most beaches in this stretch of Konkan have similar aesthetics — sand, sea, coconut palms. Anjarle stands apart for three reasons. First, the temple. The Kadyavarcha Ganpati sits atop a basalt rock that juts into the sea; at high tide, it appears to float. It draws pilgrims but not commercial tourism, so the atmosphere remains contemplative. Second, the turtle nesting. Anjarle is a designated nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles, monitored by the Maharashtra Forest Department. Third, the estuary. The Jalvi river meets the sea here, creating a brackish lagoon where local fisherfolk cast nets each morning.

Olive Ridley Turtle Nesting Season

If witnessing the ancient ritual of sea turtle nesting is on your list, Anjarle delivers between November and February. Female Olive Ridleys come ashore at night to lay eggs in the warm sand. Hatchlings emerge 45–60 days later and make their instinct-driven journey to the water. The Forest Department runs a conservation programme; nocturnal turtle watches are sometimes organised for visitors who coordinate in advance.

Important rules:

  • No artificial lights on the beach after 8 PM during nesting season
  • No walking on marked nesting zones (flagged by conservationists)
  • Do not touch turtles or disturb eggs

Getting to Anjarle from Dapoli

The drive from Dapoli takes roughly 30–35 minutes via the road through Harnai or via Kelshi. A shared auto or private taxi from Dapoli town costs ₹300–500 one way. If driving, the road narrows as you approach the village — park near the Ganpati temple and walk to the beach.

From Mumbai, the total distance is approximately 225 km (5–5.5 hours via NH66 and Dapoli bypass). From Pune, expect 185 km and about 4 hours.

What to Do at Anjarle

  • Swimming: The beach shelves gently and currents are mild outside the monsoon, making it relatively safe for swimming. Always check with locals first.
  • Photography: The Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple provides extraordinary compositions, especially at sunrise when the rock is silhouetted against the lightening sky.
  • Picnic by the estuary: The calm river mouth is ideal for sitting quietly, birdwatching, and watching fishing boats drift in.
  • Village walk: The small settlement behind the beach has coconut and betel-nut farms. Local families sell fresh coconut water.

Best Time to Visit

October to February is the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures (22–30°C), calm seas, and the chance of spotting nesting turtles. March and April are hotter but the beach is still accessible. Monsoon (June–September): the beach becomes wild and dramatic — crashing waves, mist over the estuary — but swimming is absolutely off-limits.
