Dapoli from Goa: The Ultimate Konkan Drive North
Driving from Goa to Dapoli along the Konkan coast is one of India's great road trips — 380 km of beaches, forts, fishing towns, and coastal scenery.

Most people drive from Mumbai to Goa. Fewer make the reverse journey — north along the coast from Goa through Malvan, Tarkarli, Ratnagiri, and up to Dapoli. Those who do find a route that is arguably more interesting in this direction: quieter, less travelled, and building steadily toward the Dapoli coast rather than ending at the commercially developed north Goa beaches.
The Route: Goa to Dapoli (380 km, 7–8 hours)
Panaji → NH66 North → Vengurla → Malvan → Tarkarli → Ratnagiri → Guhagar → Dapoli
The road is NH66 throughout with state road diversions to coastal towns. Well-maintained, though narrow through some village sections.
Key Stops Northbound
Malvan (100 km from Panaji): The heartland of Malvani cuisine. The town's restaurants serve the most authentic version of this regional food tradition. Sindhudurg Fort — built by Shivaji Maharaj on a rocky island — is 2 km offshore; boat trips run from the jetty.
Tarkarli (10 km north of Malvan): Maharashtra's clearest coastal water. Coral reefs, scuba diving, and excellent beach. If including Tarkarli, budget an extra night here.
Ratnagiri (200 km from Panaji): District headquarters and Alphonso mango capital. Stop at Thibaw Palace and Ratnadurg Fort. Excellent fish thali lunch.
Guhagar (255 km from Panaji): A wide, long beach with a working fishing community. The Velneshwar Temple is 15 km south — one of the most beautiful temple sites on the coast.
Dapoli (320 km from Panaji): Your endpoint. Check in to your villa by early evening, in time for a Kolthare Beach sunset.
Two-Day vs Three-Day Format
Two days: Drive Day 1 from Panaji to Ratnagiri (200 km, 4 hours + stops). Day 2 Ratnagiri to Dapoli (70 km, 1.5 hours). This is feasible but leaves little time for Malvan and Tarkarli.
Three days (recommended): Day 1 to Malvan/Tarkarli. Day 2 Tarkarli to Ratnagiri. Day 3 Ratnagiri to Dapoli. This gives you time in each location.
What Makes This Direction Special
Driving north means Dapoli is the destination, not a midpoint. Your arrival at the Kolthare coast — after the length of the Maharashtra Konkan — carries an accumulated sense of the whole coast behind you. It also means you've eaten Malvani cuisine at its most authentic source (Malvan) before arriving at its Ratnagiri incarnation in Dapoli.
