Mumbai to Dapoli Road Trip: Route, Stops & Travel Tips

The drive from Mumbai to Dapoli is one of those journeys where the trip itself becomes part of the vacation. Roughly 210 kilometres through the Konkan hinterland, it takes about 5 hours with stops. Here is everything you need to plan the perfect road trip.

The Best Route

Take the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH66) south from Mumbai. Cross the Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) if coming from Navi Mumbai, or go via the Expressway to Pen.

The standard route goes: Mumbai → Panvel → Pen → Mangaon → Dapoli

After Mangaon, you will leave the highway and turn westward towards the coast. The last 60 kilometres are on state roads through small villages and mango orchards — scenic but narrower, so drive carefully.

When to Start

Leave Mumbai by 6:00 AM to avoid the city traffic and reach Dapoli by lunchtime. Weekend departures on Friday evening work too, but expect 1-2 extra hours due to traffic near Panvel. Saturday early morning is the sweet spot — light traffic, pleasant temperatures, and you arrive in time to enjoy the afternoon.

Recommended Stops

Pen (90 km) — Good for a tea break. The town is famous for its Ganpati idol workshops, worth a quick visit if you are passing through.

Mangaon (140 km) — The last major town before you turn off the highway. Fill up fuel here, as petrol stations become sparse on the road to Dapoli. Plenty of roadside restaurants serve vada pav and misal pav.

Khed (180 km) — A small town with the nearest railway station to Dapoli. If you need to pick up supplies, this is your last chance before reaching the villa.

Road Conditions

The highway from Mumbai to Mangaon is a well-maintained four-lane road. After Mangaon, roads narrow to two lanes. The last stretch to Dapoli involves some winding sections through forested hills — beautiful but demanding if you are not used to ghat driving.

During monsoon (June-September), expect occasional potholes and waterlogging on the Dapoli road. A car with reasonable ground clearance handles it fine, but drive slower.

What to Carry

  • Cash — Many roadside stalls and smaller petrol stations do not accept cards
  • Snacks and water — Options thin out after Mangaon
  • Music playlist — Cell coverage drops in some patches between Mangaon and Dapoli
  • Toll money — There are 2-3 toll plazas along the route (FASTag works at most)

Alternative Route from Pune

Coming from Pune? Take the Pune-Tamhini Ghat-Mangaon route (about 170 km, 4 hours). The drive through Tamhini Ghat is spectacularly scenic, especially during monsoon when waterfalls cascade down both sides of the road. After Mangaon, the route to Dapoli is the same.

The Pune route is shorter in distance but takes similar time due to the ghat section. It is well worth it for the views.

Pro Tips

  • Avoid driving at night on the Mangaon-Dapoli stretch — the road is poorly lit and has sharp turns
  • Carry a physical map or download offline maps — GPS signal can be unreliable
  • If you arrive late, call ahead and have the caretaker keep the lights on and water heated
  • The return trip on Sunday evening is usually smooth if you leave Dapoli by 3 PM

The journey from Mumbai to Dapoli is the kind of drive that reminds you why road trips still beat flights — every turn reveals a new shade of green, and the anticipation builds as the ocean scent hits the air.
