Murud-Janjira Fort: Day Trip from Dapoli — Guide, Timings & How to Reach
Murud-Janjira is India's only unconquered island fort — and it's accessible as a day trip from Dapoli. Complete guide with timings, boat information, and tips.

Among the forts of coastal India, Murud-Janjira holds a unique distinction: it was never captured. Not by the Portuguese. Not by the Marathas. Not by the British. This 300-year-old sea fort in the Rajapuri Creek, rising directly from the water on a rocky island, remains today exactly as its builders intended — impregnable, mysterious, and extraordinary.
What Makes Murud-Janjira Special
Janjira (from the Arabic word jazira, meaning island) was built by the Siddi dynasty — rulers of African origin who served as naval commanders for the Bijapur Sultanate. Construction of the current fort is attributed to Siddi Surur Khan in the late 1500s, though there are records of an earlier wooden fort on the same site.
What makes it architecturally remarkable is that the 22-acre island is entirely covered by the fort — the walls rise straight from the sea, 12 metres high, with 19 bastions. There is no approach beach; the only way in or out is by boat.
The Marathas under Shivaji Maharaj attempted to capture Janjira multiple times. A famous episode involves a failed underwater tunnel attempt. Even Kanhoji Angre — the greatest Maratha admiral — could never breach it. This history gives the fort an almost mythological quality.

Inside the Fort
The fort contains:
- The main entrance gate (Darwaza) — ornately carved
- Three large cannons, one of which (Kalal Bangdi) is famous for its inscriptions
- A freshwater lake inside the fort — remarkable given it's surrounded by seawater
- The ruins of the Siddi palace, mosque, and granaries
- The fort well — still functional
A guide is highly recommended. The ASI office at the jetty can connect you with licensed guides (₹200–400).
