7-Day Konkan Coast Road Trip Itinerary: Mumbai to Goa via Dapoli

The Konkan coast between Mumbai and Goa is 580 km of some of the most beautiful coastal landscape in India — beaches, forts, fishing towns, laterite plateaus, and backwaters. Most people fly this route in 50 minutes. Those who drive it in 7 days return with a completely different understanding of what Maharashtra's coast actually is.

The Route

Mumbai → Alibaug (95 km) → Murud-Janjira (65 km) → Dapoli (100 km) → Ratnagiri (70 km) → Guhagar (55 km) → Malvan (110 km) → Goa (75 km)

Day 1: Mumbai to Alibaug

Distance: 95 km (or take the Mandwa ferry from Gateway of India — 1 hour + 30 min drive)

Alibaug is the warm-up. The Kolaba Fort (accessible at low tide) is the main heritage attraction. Alibaug Beach is long and good for a first beach walk. Stay the night — there are plenty of hotel and villa options.

Day 2: Alibaug to Murud-Janjira

Distance: 65 km

Murud-Janjira — the unconquered island fort — deserves at least 3 hours. Take the boat from Rajapuri Jetty near Murud town (morning departure recommended). Explore the fort's bastions, cannon emplacements, and freshwater lake. Murud Beach is wide and clean. Stay overnight in Murud.

Day 3: Murud to Dapoli

Distance: 100 km via NH66 (passing through Mangaon)

Arrive in Dapoli by noon. Check in to your villa, decompress, walk to Kolthare Beach for the afternoon. Sunset from the beach. Malvani dinner at the villa.

Day 4: Dapoli Full Day

The centrepiece of the coastal route. Early morning to Harnai Harbour for the fish auction, then boat to Suvarnadurg Fort. Afternoon at Anjarle Beach. Evening back at the villa.

Day 5: Dapoli to Ratnagiri

Distance: 70 km (scenic coastal route through Guhagar possible)

Stop at Velneshwar Temple — 50 km from Dapoli, 20 km before Ratnagiri. The clifftop temple with sea views is one of the highlights of the entire route.

In Ratnagiri: Thibaw Palace (the exile home of Burma's last king), Ratnadurg Fort, and Mandvi Beach. Excellent fish thali restaurants here.

Day 6: Ratnagiri to Malvan via Tarkarli

Distance: 165 km

Tarkarli is the gem of the south Konkan coast. The clearest water in Maharashtra — coral reefs, scuba diving, snorkelling. Sindhudurg Fort (built by Shivaji Maharaj) sits 2 km offshore. Malvani cuisine in Malvan town is the most authentic version of this regional food tradition.

Stay in Malvan or Tarkarli (2 nights if possible — scuba diving takes a full day).

Day 7: Malvan to Goa

Distance: 75 km

Cross into Goa via the Goa–Maharashtra border. The transition is dramatic — the landscape shifts, the signage changes, and suddenly there are beach clubs and espresso bars. If you've done the full 7-day route, Goa will feel like an epilogue.

Road Conditions and Practical Notes

  • The NH66 from Mumbai to Goa is well-maintained throughout
  • Village roads connecting to beaches and temples are narrower — a small SUV or sedan is ideal
  • Book accommodation in advance for peak season (October–February), especially in Dapoli and Malvan
  • Fuel stations are adequate throughout; fill up at Mangaon, Ratnagiri, and Malvan to avoid running low on village roads

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Mumbai to Goa coastal road trip take?
7 days is the right pace for the full experience. A rushed version in 4–5 days is possible but leaves little time at each destination.

Can I do this road trip year-round?
October–May is ideal. Monsoon (June–September) adds dramatic scenery but some roads flood and boat services to forts are suspended.

Is Dapoli worth a stop on the Mumbai–Goa road trip?
Absolutely — the Suvarnadurg Fort experience and the Harnai Harbour morning are highlights of the entire route.
